Alexandria White, founder of ScentSoftly Candle Co, set out to create a brand that felt layered and deeply personal. Her approach to candle-making grew from a lifelong connection to creativity, especially writing, which had been part of her life since childhood. Over time, she began to view scent as a companion to language, a way to extend emotion beyond the page. This realization led her to build ScentSoftly, where fragrance and poetry offer a sensory and reflective experience.
Alex’s journey into entrepreneurship unfolded through a series of personal and professional explorations. With a background that included roles across different industries, she strengthened her ability to adapt quickly and engage confidently with new challenges. Yet, throughout those experiences, a creative thread remained constant. Writing, in particular, served as an outlet, whether through poetry or storytelling. Alex says, “I’ve always seen words as a way to hold onto moments. They give shape to feelings that might otherwise pass too quickly.”
The turning point arrived in 2020, during a period marked by both disruption and introspection. Alex found herself rethinking how she wanted to spend her time and energy. That season of change created space for something new to emerge. When she came across a candle-making kit, the tactile process immediately resonated with her. Still, it felt like one part of a larger idea waiting to take form.
As she experimented with wax, fragrance oils, and color, she began to imagine how her writing could exist alongside these physical creations. The concept evolved naturally: each candle would carry its own narrative, expressed through a poem designed to echo the scent’s mood and character. “The wax became the medium, but the words became the meaning,” she says. “Together, they create something that feels complete.”
This integration of poetry into candle-making became the foundation of ScentSoftly. Its products are hand-poured using natural wax blends and thoughtfully selected fragrance profiles, then paired with an original piece of writing. “My goal is for the written piece to become a keepsake, something that lingers long after the flame has faded,” Alex remarks. The poems are carefully composed to align with the sensory experience, inviting the recipient to engage with the candle on multiple levels.
The brand’s philosophy leans into emotional resonance. Alex regards her work as an exploration of memory and connection. “Scent has a way of bringing you back to a specific moment,” she explains. “I believe that pairing that with language deepens the experience. It gives you something to return to, again and again.” This perspective guides both her creative process and the way she presents each collection.
Alex notes that across the ScentSoftly collection, each product carries its own narrative, expressed through both scent and story. Grandma’s Place brings forward notes of bright citrus layered with butter, sugar, and vanilla, offering a gentle nod to familiar kitchens and shared moments. Embers and Echoes leans into a more atmospheric experience, with bonfire embers unfolding through maple, clove, and soft undertones of patchouli and sandalwood, creating a sense of warmth that lingers like an evening outdoors. Meanwhile, Smoke and Mirrors, part of a broader scent therapy concept, introduces a blend of smoked oud, spearmint, and leather, softened by hints of coconut and grounded by sandalwood and cedar.
Custom creations hold a particularly meaningful place in Alex’s work. Through a detailed process, clients can share personal details about the person or memory they wish to honor. From there, Alex develops a scent profile and accompanying poem designed to reflect that story. According to Alex, one project involved a client who wanted to celebrate their grandmother’s memory. Using a piece of fabric as inspiration, she crafted a fragrance that combined citrus, herbal, and soft, comforting notes.
She notes that the resulting candle invited the recipient to revisit cherished moments through both scent and language. “I want people to feel seen in what I create,” Alex shares. “There’s something powerful about receiving something that feels like it was made with you in mind.” This intention extends to every aspect of ScentSoftly, from the composition of each fragrance to the cadence of each line of poetry.
That sense of intention remains central as ScentSoftly grows. Alex’s work reflects a belief that creativity can serve as the foundation of a business, guiding both its direction and its impact. The candles themselves offer a temporary presence, yet the emotions they evoke carry forward in lasting ways. “Even when the candle is gone, the feeling stays with you,” she says. “That’s the part I care about most.”
